JPEG 2000, or JP2, is a variation of the more popular JPEG format. The JPEG 2000 has the same benefits and issues as JPEG with the primary difference being that if a file is highly compressed – a JP2 file will retain more quality than a JPG file.

The main limitation with JPEG 2000 is that it is a lossy format. Every time a JPEG 2000 file is edited and saved some visual quality is lost in the process and cannot be restored. Thus JPEG 2000 is not well suited to files that will undergo multiple edits. Indeed, the JPEG 2000 format can not be used in astronomical or medical imaging where the exact reproduction of the data is required.

If you need to edit a JPEG 2000 file, you should save it to a lossless format such as PNG, make the edits, and then create a JPEG 2000 for distribution. This is where Contenta Converter PREMIUM can be a huge assist. Using Contenta Converter PREMIUM you can load a JP2 file and convert it to formats like PNG. I will demonstrate the quick and easy way to do this with Contenta Converter PREMIUM.

Step 1: Select your photos.

Click on the Add Photos button and select from your computer the .JP2 photos you wish to convert. Then click the ‘Next’ button.

Contenta Converter PREMIUM will convert photos and images from an amazing variety of formats. Along with these conversions, you can also add in some very useful processing features. Contenta Converter PREMIUM can create JPEG or JPEG2000 images of the exact quality you need using the JPEG quality slider. JPEG file size and quality are simple – the larger the file, the higher the quality and thus the smaller the file, the lower the quality. Often you want to minimize file size – but not reduce the quality so much as to make the image unclear.

This how-to article will show you how easy and pain free it is to perfectly balance file size and image quality in just a few simple steps using Contenta Converter PREMIUM.

Step 1: Select your photos.

Click on the Add Photos button and select from the photo, or even photos, where you want the size adjusted. Then click the ‘Next’ button.

Selecting your photo using Contenta Converter PREMIUM

Step 2: Configure the conversion job

In this case we select JPEG (JPEG2000 is the only other file format that supports this). We use the slider to select a quality of 21. But what does that really mean? Go up to the Upper left and select Image Preview.

Select JPEG file quality using Contenta Converter PREMIUM

You can see the original image on the left and the new image on the right. You can use the buttons to zoom in and out. We zoomed in quite close so you could see where the image starts to show the lower quality.

Image Preview using Contenta Converter PREMIUM

All done!

When you have all the settings the way you like them, you select Start. Soon you will have a successful file conversion and images that are the exact file size and quality to meet your needs!

When you take great pictures, one of the first things you want to do is share them with friends and family. Sure you can upload to some web site but not all your friends use photo hosting sites and those that do all use different photo hosting sites and by the time you are done – what a hassle. Email is without a doubt the quickest and easiest way to get the photos out. One of my favorite features in Contenta Converter PREMIUM is to be able to convert, compress and email all in one easy process.

Follow along as we demonstrate just how quick and easy it is to email your photos using Contenta Converter PREMIUM.

Step 1: Select your photos.

Click on the Add Photos button and select from your computer the photos you wish to convert. Now here we are going to show some of the coolest features in Contenta Converter PREMIUM. You have a Canon Camera that produces CR2 RAW photographs and your spouse has a Mamiya camera that outputs the photos as MOS RAW. Now odds are that not all your friends can view these formats. Plus RAW files are quite large so they will be a pain to email. But we’ll use Contenta Converter PREMIUM to handle all these issues at once! Once you have picked all your files, click the ‘Next’ button.

Select the files you want to convert and email using Contenta Converter PREMIUM

Step 2: Configure the conversion job

Select the EMAIL option and then you can choose any email program that is registered on your computer. You can choose to Optimize for email which selects JPEG at 800×60o. You can even select to ZIP (compress) the files or if you choose not to ZIP, you can have Contenta Converter PREMIUM setup multiple email messages if any one message gets too large (and you can even pick what size means “too large”). Since we are going to use JPEG files to replace the MOS and CR2 files – look at the size difference, 24.1 Mb down to 1.8 Mb.

Select the email option using Contenta Converter PREMIUM

Conversion done – get ready to email!

Click start and soon you will see the final screen that says the files are converted. Click on Email to start the sending of your photos.

Email your photos with Contenta Converter PREMIUM

The Portable Network Graphics (PNG) file format is a lossless format that is useful for saving photographs that require successive editing. With a lossless format you do not loss quality each time you edit the file. Then, after you do all the editing and the photograph is ready to be distributed, it is usually best to save it as a JPEG which has a much smaller file size.

This is where Contenta Converter PREMIUM can be a huge assist. Using Contenta Converter PREMIUM you can load a PNG file and convert it to formats like JPEG. I will demonstrate the quick and easy way to do this with Contenta Converter PREMIUM.

Step 1: Select your photos.

Click on the Add Photos button and select from your computer the .PNG photos you wish to convert. Then click the ‘Next’ button.

Selecting files for conversion with Contenta Converter PREMIUM

Step 2: Configure the conversion job

Make sure the “Do convert to format” checkbox is checked and select the format. In this example we picked JPEG, but the drop down menu also gives you the choices for BMP, JPEG 2000, TIFF and more than a dozen other formats! You can also select a different output folder if you want to. This is the location where the files converted to JPEG will be stored.

The file size preview in the lower left highlights how the JPEG file size is so much smaller than the PNG file.

Select which format to convert to using Contenta Converter Premium

All done!

Click start and soon you will see the final screen and you will have your new JPEG file – which is 4% the size of the original PNG file!

The popular JPEG format dates back to 1986 when it was designed by the Joint Photographic Experts Group. The format is popular for two main reasons. First, the files can be compressed which makes it ideal for web usage, where the bandwidth used by an image is important. Second, almost all digital cameras can create images in the JPEG format.

The main limitation with JPEG is that it is a lossy format. Every time a JPEG file is edited and saved some visual quality is lost in the process and cannot be restored. Thus JPEG is not well suited to files that will undergo multiple edits. Indeed, the JPEG format can not be used in astronomical or medical imaging where the exact reproduction of the data is required.

If you need to edit a JPEG file, you should save it to a lossless format such as PNG, make the edits, and then create a JPEG for distribution. This is where Contenta Converter PREMIUM can be a huge assist. Using Contenta Converter PREMIUM you can load a JPEG file and convert it to formats like PNG.
