The popular JPEG format dates back to 1986 when it was designed by the  Joint Photographic Experts Group. The format is popular for two main reasons.  First, the files can be compressed which makes it ideal for web usage,where the bandwidth used by an image is important.  Second, almost all digital cameras can create images in the JPEG format.

The main limitation with JPEG is that it is a lossy format.  Every time a JPEG file is edited and saved some visual quality is lost in the process and cannot be restored.  Thus JPEG is not well suited to files that will undergo multiple edits.  Indeed, the JPEG format can not be used in astronomical or medical imaging where the exact reproduction of the data is required.

If you need to edit a JPEG file, you should save it to a lossless format such as PNG, make the edits, and then create a JPEG for distribution. Step 1: Select your photos.

Click on the Add Photos button and select from your computer the .JPG photos you wish to convert. Then click the ‘Next’ button.

Step 2: Configure the conversion job

Make sure the “Do convert to format” check box is checked and select the format. In this example we picked PNG. You can also select a different output folder if you want to. This is the location where the files converted to PNG will be stored.
